TWITTERING ABOUT TWITTER
Barb Head Shot

Rules for the road
Lately, I've been "twittering about Twitter" like many of you. The other day I found an interesting article on FastCompany.com titled "Turbocharging Your Twitter Power: 6 Rules for the Road" that I'd like to share with you

Reading this article made me think about my own experience with Twitter. After several months of reading, thinking and hearing about Twitter, I decided to "jump in" and experience it for myself.

Sink or swim
I'll admit, I was a bit nervous at first to try Twitter because I wasn't really sure how it worked..In fact the experience was somewhat akin to trying to jump into a cold lake. You walk in slowly, splash around, get water on yourself and try to immerse yourself. Finally you decide that you just have to jump in and sink or swim!

That's what I had to do with Twitter -- just jump in and start experiencing it for myself first-hand. And you know what? It worked!

Turbocharge your Twitter power
Now I'm working on writing effective "tweets" and trying to avoid telling the world things like "I just ate a ham sandwich" because who cares about that?

Top Twitter tips
For those of you who are also working to "maximize your Twitter power", here are the top tips that Cheryl Contee recommends in her blog post in the FastCompany.com article I referenced:

  • Be informative
  • Use hashtags
  • Talk to people
  • Re-tweet
  • Thank people
  • Get Twitter to go

Tap into magical power of Twitter
According to Contee, thanking people for "twittering" about you is one of the key ways to "tap into the magical powers of Twitter". She points out that "people love to be mentioned in Twitter" and they will be much more likely to follow you if you do, which is always a plus in cyberspace.

Thank you tweet
As a matter of fact, I experienced this the other day when I posted a "tweet" about a Vocus webinar that I am planning to attend. The "thank you tweet" that followed mine from a person at Vocus was quite a pleasant surprise!

Now, I'm working on gaining a better understanding of Facebook...

Greetings! These days it seems like everyone is "all a- twitter about Twitter". In fact, I took a break from doing this newsletter to send another "tweet" when I discovered that the system was down once again.

Clearly a lot of other people are "tweeting" on Twitter! (I am beginning to wonder how some people find the time to work considering all of the tweets they write!)

In this month's issue I focus on my own experiences using Twitter and also provide a summary of a recent survey about Twitter being an effective business tool.

As always, I hope you find the articles interesting, useful, and most of all insightful!

Sincerely,
Barbara Mednick

  • TWITTER BEST SOCIAL MEDIA TOOL FOR BUSINESS
  • The other day I was trying to post a "tweet" on Twitter when the system notified me that it was "over capacity" again! It got me thinking and wondering if Twitter really is a good social media tool for business and whether it will last? Lately I've had this conversation with friends and colleagues, who also question this issue.

    Interesting study
That's why I was interested to read an article by social media strategist Sally Falkow titled "Twitter Best Social Media Tool for Business" posted on the Bulldog Reporter blog. Falkow, who blogs at the PRoactive Report, references a study by Abrams Research about the best media tools for business. I think you'll find it interesting also.

    Ranking of best tools
Abrams Research, who polled 200 social media leaders about the future of social media, got some surprising answers. Here is how they ranked the best social media tools for business:

    • 40 percent of respondents picked Twitter
    • 21.3 percent chose LinkedIn
    • 18.8 percent YouTube
    • 15.3 percent said Facebook
